Diego Martínez: "It was unfortunate to concede the equaliser off an isolated chance"
The RCD Espanyol coach reflects on the 2-2 draw with Girona
RCD Espanyol coach Diego Martínez analysed the 2-2 draw against Girona in his post-match press conference on Saturday, and highlighted the effort made by the team whilst lamenting that the win got away from them at the end.
He said, “It has been a very difficult and complex week, in which the team have done things well in all three games. In the first half today it was difficult for us to recover the ball and we rushed a bit due to our desire.
"In the second half we looked for more depth, and then when it came to making changes it was a delicate situation because there were players who were struggling after so much effort. We did the most difficult thing, which was to come back from behind, and we have had chances in which we were able to kill the game off, but unfortunately from an isolated move they got the equaliser."
Martínez said, “We had phases of the game in which we controlled things, but others in which we didn't. In the second half, we have had a phase of clear dominance. You can talk about many things, including confidence, but we cannot deny that there were all kinds of phases and that we continue to make mistakes that are costing us many goals. I will take away the positives, that the team never give up, but it is clear that that is not enough".
He concluded, “What we all want is to win more games, and that is why we must make fewer mistakes and make sure that errors don't cost us goals. There have been three very good games this week for us, with a crowd that have supported us perfectly. It would have been an extraordinary week if Girona hadn't equalised at the end.
"There are players who still need to click with the team, but there is no doubt that the team give everything. We know how to get more points, but it isn't working out. There are teams that have taken more points with worse football than us.”
