125th anniversary plans and logo presented
The club's 'Artisans of football' project is explained in Barcelona
This past Thursday, RCD Espanyol held the opening ceremony that presented the activities and initiatives that will be held in the coming months, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the club. The celebrations will conclude on 28 October at the University of Barcelona, the site of the club's origin.
At the presentation ceremony in the Ángel Rodríguez presidential box, a number of former directors, authorities, former players, as well as representatives of the current men's and women's first teams convened.
Some of the details that will accompany the anniversary of Espanyol, with the theme of 'Artisans of football,' were shown during the event. The logo was officially presented, inspired by Barcelona in 1900, with a clear modernist air and details of the ‘art nouveau’ movement popular at the time.
The logo, by designer Carlos Belmar, was presented on a piece of handmade ceramics that Joan Garcia, the first team goalkeeper, and former player Thomas N’Kono, collected from the ceramic workshop and brought to this official presentation. Mention was also made of the first news item that appeared in the magazine ‘Los Deportes’, on 28 October 1900, which reported the official foundation of RCD Espanyol.
Over the next few months, a series of social, institutional and sporting activities will take place, which emphasise the club's connection with Catalan society. Antoni Fernández Teixidó, president of the RCD Espanyol Foundation, revealed that "we want to vindicate the importance of this club and the trajectory of this institution with 125 years of history -and ready to celebrate another 125 more. In these coming months we will not only talk about our past and present, but also about the future. We will not just remember what we did, but also talk about what we want to do."
Finally, Mao Ye, CEO of the club, highlighted "the pride, identity and legacy that has been passed down from generation to generation. We continue to look to the future with determination, effort and loyalty to our principles. We will continue to dream, without losing sight of everything that makes us unique. 125 years is not just a celebration, but a starting point to continue writing the next chapters of our history.”
