“We have no other idea than to go compete”
Manolo González is out for victory in Friday's promotion battle with CD Leganés
Manolo González is relishing the top-of-the-table clash this Friday away to CD Leganés.
RCD Espanyol go to the Estadio Municipal Butarque with the aim of slashing the current LALIGA HYPERMOTION leaders’ lead to one point, as every game is a must-win in the battle for automatic promotion.
González said, “It is vital for us to win for team morale, as well as for the opponent we are facing, the difficulty of the match and the state of the table. Leganés are the best team in the league - the numbers say so - and when you've been there for so many matchweeks, the numbers say a lot. When you are top at this point, it is for a reason”.
Espanyol travel to Madrid without Keita Balde who misses out through injury, allowing B team player Rafa Bauza to join the first team squad. There are four points between Leganés and the Mágico going into Friday’s clash, with neither side beaten in their last five outings.
The coach continued, “We will try to make the match as uncomfortable as possible for the opponent. It will be a complicated game, but if we are good we are capable of beating any opponent at any ground. I am only focused on winning the game, knowing that they are a demanding opponent. We have no other idea than to go compete, try to win and make the Espanyol people proud of the team.
“Each match will be important and decisive. It is as important to win against Leganés as it is to do so next week against FC Andorra. You have to approach the game as we mean to go out, and we are all aware of its importance”.
