“The team wants to and goes out to win”
Manolo González keeps automatic promotion as his goal ahead of Monday's meeting with Real Oviedo
Ahead of a massive match against Real Oviedo on Monday, Manolo González still believes in automatic promotion.
RCD Espanyol take on a promotion rival at the Stage Front Stadium, knowing that it is critical to get the three points with three games left to play.
The men’s head coach said, “We do not want to settle for third in the league, we will fight until the end to go up via automatic promotion. We are clear, we are able, and even after so many draws it seems difficult, but we believe. I am only looking at the fact that we have to beat Oviedo this Monday. No matter how much others lose, if we do not win, it will have no impact”.
Espanyol have drawn five consecutive games but remain in contention for the top two and the play-offs, which is where they currently sit. They will hopefully be backed by another strong home crowd at the Temple on Monday night.
González said, “I would be worried if we did not create attacking opportunities, but we have to take our chances. The team wants to win, goes out to win and create chances. We have had bad moments in different games, but I also think that the team deserves more than what we have.
“We have achieved defensive stability, but we have to go a step further. It annoys us that, despite being better than other rivals, you don't end up beating them. The women’s team [who got promoted on Thursday] will give us a boost in the remaining games to achieve the goal”.
