“It is a pity”
Manolo González knows that there is little room for error after the draw with Elche CF
Manolo González regrets the lost opportunity to return to the automatic promotion spots, as RCD Espanyol drew 2-2 with Elche CF on Saturday.
González said, “It is a pity, but we have to be positive. The point is not enough. We managed to take the lead on two occasions and conceding equalisers from dead ball situations hurts you. I think the team was better in the second half and we took the lead again. We could have even made it 3-2 late on, but we were not able to kill the game off”.
Espanyol scored twice to take the lead in each half, first Javi Puado scoring after 105 seconds then Martin Braithwaite heading in his 20th goal of the season. González, watching on from the stands in his second match of his two-game touchline ban, recognises that the margin for error is even smaller from now until matchday 42.
The head coach said, “They equalised relatively soon after on both occasions and that set out what happened afterwards. It is a pity, the way the game went, it was there to win it. We knew that the opponent, due to the way they played, could break down in the second half and we tried to take that step forward that brought us closer to winning.
“However we were not able to achieve it, despite having the last chance of the game to seize the win. That forces us not to drop any points at home in the upcoming games”.
