2-1: Deserved comeback
RCD Espanyol B came from behind to defeat Penya Independent
RCD Espanyol B came from behind to win 2-1 against Penya Independent on Saturday.
Espanyol started the battle very well, creating three scoring chances in the first quarter of an hour through Javi Hernández, Roger Martínez and Omar Sadik. Despite their promising start, it was the visitors Penya Independent who struck first after winning the ball in midfield and taking the lead to go into half-time.
In the second half, Espanyol came out with the clear idea of turning the score around. Their persistence paid off when Ian Forns was brought down and the referee awarded a penalty, which Javi Hernández duly converted for the equaliser.
Forns was fouled again inside the area just moments later, but this time round the referee decided not to give anything in Espanyol’s favour. The last 20 minutes were tight as the Mágico continued to push and persist, and it paid off. Omar Sadik was the man who scored the winner, finishing off Forns’ cross for a moment of ecstasy.
A deserved victory and spirited comeback for the young pericos, who overcame a direct rival in the fight for survival in the final home game of 2023.
