15 years of the RCDE Stadium
The ground celebrates a milestone in its history
August 2nd, 2009, was one of the most important days in the history of RCD Espanyol. It was on that date that the RCDE Stadium was inaugurated.
The day was perfect: The opening ceremony was original, entertaining and surprising and the match against Liverpool FC could not have gone better, ending in a 3-0 victory thanks to a goal from Luis García and a brace for Ben Sahar, with the late Dani Jarque captaining the team.
For the fans, it was the first time in 12 years that they had been able to call a stadium home, after 12 years at the Estadio Olimpico Lluís Companys.
Since then, 325 official matches have been played at the RCDE Stadium, with a total of 149 victories, 86 draws and 90 defeats for RCD Espanyol. Some 467 have been scored by Los Pericos and 375 conceded. The top scorers at the hallowed ground are Sergio García and Raúl de Tomás, with a total of 27 goals, with Javi Puado just behind them in the ranking.
Fifteen years on from its inauguration, the RCDE Stadium continues to be a benchmark stadium within LALIGA, and one of the most highly valued sports facilities both nationally and internationally. Aside from recognitions such as the Stadium Business Award in 2010, it has hosted numerous international friendlies, concerts by global stars and countless events in the different spaces at the venue.
In the future, one of the club's great aspirations is to host games in the 2030 World Cup organised by the federations of Spain, Portugal and Morocco. It has passed the first round and only the final approval from FIFA remains to be obtained.
