“We wanted to fix this situation”
Fernando Calero hopes for the team to build on their win over Elche and continue getting results
A much-needed win against Elche last weekend has restored confidence to the men’s first team, and defender Fernando Calero is now eager to keep up the momentum.
RCD Espanyol prevailed 2-0 at the Stage Front Stadium on Saturday, being the only team in the top five to pick up points on matchday 16. Calero was part of the backline that kept a clean sheet and recognises the significance of those three points.
He said, “We really wanted to fix this situation and return to the path of victory. We showed our desire and intensity and the result reflected it. We have confidence in our playing style, but with positive results everything is much easier. From this victory onwards, the team will take a step forward”.
The win sees Espanyol rise up to fourth in the LALIGA Hypermotion table, in clear and close pursuit of the automatic promotion spots which they are just a point shy of. Next up is another clash at the Temple, as Madrid-based side Alcorcón visit the Stage Front Stadium on Sunday night.
Calero explained, “We were not going through a good streak in terms of points. This league is very complicated and we see how many teams drop points. We want to get back to that winning streak. No one is going to go up in January. We have to be very consistent and with our feet on the ground because the important end goal is promotion”.
